Flight Mode

A full airliner-style flight deck across the bottom of the screen, with an autopilot that flies your plane or helicopter to any region and position you type in.

Wolf Territories only. This needs WolfViewer or WolfStorm on a Wolf Territories region. On other grids the menu items, buttons and panels are not shown at all.

Other viewers fly aircraft with the normal keys, exactly as before.

Overview

An avatar standing on the Sandbox beach with a green head-up display over the view: a horizon line, a pitch ladder and boxes for speed and vertical speed. Across the bottom is the flight deck: MASTER WARNING and CAUTION, the autopilot panel with A/T, IAS 120, LNAV, VNAV, HEADING 000, HDG SEL, ALTITUDE 500, ALT HOLD, VERT SPEED, V/S, CMD, RANGE, PLAN, HUD, MAP, AIRPORTS, PANEL, HELP and EXIT; below it a clock, the gear lever with three green lights, the sidestick and throttle, the primary flight display, the navigation display with red terrain, the crew alert and flight control screen showing region Sandbox, and the flight computer on its DIRECT TO page.

Turning it on

  • World > Flight Mode. The deck takes the bottom of the screen and the normal toolbar is put away while it shows (the Toolbar icon in the bottom-right corner brings it back).
  • The plane icon in the bottom-right corner shows or hides the deck. Hidden, Flight Mode and the autopilot keep flying.
  • EXIT on the deck leaves Flight Mode.
  • HELP opens the quick guide; click above the deck to close it.

How it flies your aircraft

The autopilot never moves you or the aircraft directly. It presses the same keys you would, so your aircraft’s own script flies itself exactly as it does for a pilot on the keys. That is why it works with planes and helicopters from any maker, once it knows which keys your aircraft uses (the Your aircraft tab).

Touching a flight key or the sidestick hands control back to you.

The instruments

Close-up of the flight deck: the glareshield of buttons and windows across the top, then the clock with UTC and elapsed time, the gear command lever with NOSE, LEFT and RIGHT lights and an ENG button, the sidestick and THR lever, the primary flight display with speed and altitude tapes, the navigation display with red terrain, the crew alerts and flight control screen with REGION Sandbox and position 138/312/21, and the flight computer showing DIRECT TO with CRZ ALT 500FT and AP OFF.

The panel

Clock

UTC, and the time since Flight Mode came on.

Gear lever and ENG

The landing gear lever and its three lights, and the engine button. Each sends your aircraft's own chat command (see Your aircraft).

Sidestick and throttle

Drag the sidestick to pitch and bank (pull back for nose up); it centres when you let go. The throttle lever springs back too, and uses your throttle keys. On a helicopter they are the cyclic (forward, back and yaw) and the collective (up and down).

Primary flight display

Attitude with the pitch ladder, bank scale, slip and the flight director; the speed tape with its trend; the altitude tape with the ground; vertical speed and heading.

Navigation display

A heading-up compass with the route to your destination, the terrain from the loaded regions against your height, other avatars, the wind, ground speed and arrival time. Click it, or PLAN, to switch to the whole route.

Crew alerts and flight controls

The alert list; a picture of what the autopilot and you are holding on each axis; your region, position and flight data.

Flight computer (CDU)

Click its screen and type. DIR TO is where to fly, CTL is which keys your aircraft uses, EXEC carries out a route you typed, CLR clears (hold it to clear everything), DEL then a side key clears that line, HELP is the quick guide.

Warnings

TERRAIN and PULL UP: land or an object ahead, so climb. Click the flashing MASTER WARNING or CAUTION to cancel them.

The autopilot

Fly to a place

  1. Sit in your plane or helicopter.
  2. Click the flight computer’s screen (bottom right).
  3. Type where to go as REGION/X/Y/Z and press Enter, for example Madrigal/128/128/60. Just Madrigal means 128/128/0, and a height of 0 means as low as is safe. The map shows a magenta line to it. Or pick a place on the World Map, then press <MAP DEST on the flight computer.
  4. Set ALTITUDE (on the glareshield) to the height to cruise at.
  5. Press CMD. It flies straight there: planes circle over the spot, helicopters hover on it.

With CMD on the autothrottle comes on too, so a plane holds its speed. With no destination it flies the heading it is on.

Taking off and landing by itself WolfViewer

  • Take-off: press CMD with a plane on the ground and it takes off along the way it is pointing: it first says your engine command (when one is set), rolls at full power, rotates once it has the speed, climbs out with the gear up, then follows the route (or the heading) at your cruise height. If the roll goes wrong it stops on the runway and hands back to you.
  • Landing: when your destination region has an airport on the Airports page, a plane flies to it, finds the runway, flies a 3 degree approach and lands.

Your aircraft and scripts

Aircraft differ in which keys they use. Press CTL on the flight computer for the CONTROLS page; the keys beside each line change it.

AUTO LEARNON or OFF: turns reversed keys round by itself while the autopilot flies (only for this session)ON
GEAR CMD and CHANNELthe chat command the gear lever says, and its channel (0 = said aloud)"g" on channel 0
ENGINE CMD and CHANNELthe chat command the ENG button says, and its channel"start" on channel 0

To change a command, type it on the flight computer, then press the key beside GEAR CMD or ENGINE CMD (or beside CHANNEL for the channel). An empty command shows as dashes, and pressing the lever then posts “GEAR CMD NOT SET” instead of saying anything.

For aircraft makers

  • Fly from the keys as usual: llTakeControls and a control() event. The arrows and W/S arrive as CONTROL_FWD / CONTROL_BACK, the turn keys as CONTROL_ROT_LEFT / CONTROL_ROT_RIGHT, Page Up / Page Down as CONTROL_UP / CONTROL_DOWN, and Shift+arrows as CONTROL_LEFT / CONTROL_RIGHT. The autopilot holds exactly those.
  • The gear lever and the ENG button are chat from the pilot, on the channel the pilot set (0 by default), so listen for the pilot saying your command. Tell your pilots which commands and channel your aircraft uses so they can set them on the CONTROLS page.
  • The auto take-off says the engine command before it rolls, and the gear command after lift-off.

A minimal listener for the gear and engine commands

// The gear and engine of an aircraft, answering Flight Mode's defaults:
// "g" and "start", said by the pilot on channel 0.
key pilot;
integer gearDown = TRUE;

default
{
    changed(integer change)
    {
        if (change & CHANGED_LINK)
        {
            pilot = llAvatarOnSitTarget();
            if (pilot != NULL_KEY) llListen(0, "", pilot, "");
        }
    }

    listen(integer channel, string name, key id, string message)
    {
        if (message == "g")
        {
            gearDown = !gearDown;
            // move your gear prims up or down here
        }
        else if (message == "start")
        {
            // start your engine here
        }
    }
}

A real aircraft would remove the old listen when the pilot changes and set a sit target in state_entry; this shows only the two commands.
