Places and ways on
Where this works
- Works todayThe Story page under Advanced editing in WolfStorm.
- In WolfViewer now (Speedy Xenon)The Places and Story pages under Advanced editing in WolfViewer.
- On across Wolf Territories (each region at its next restart)Ways on fire in the world once your region has the next update.
On Your story map, Place it here puts a box where you stand and Leads to... says how it is finished. This page is for the finer control on the expert pages, which call a way on a trigger.
Places
Press Advanced editing at the foot of Your story map, then Places. It has four tabs: Spots, Areas, Paths and Chests. While the page is open, every place is drawn in the world so you can see it.
| Place | Use it for | How to put it in the world |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | Where a character stands, or a map marker. | Press Add Spot, then Place in world and click the ground, a floor or an object. Drag to turn it, or press [ and ]. The arrow keys nudge it. Press Enter when done. Or stand there and press Use my position. |
| Area | A space players walk into, such as a room or a clearing. | Stand in it and press Use my position (a circle round you), or Draw circle: click the centre, then the edge. Or Draw polygon: click each corner and press Enter (Backspace takes a corner back). |
| Path | A route a character walks. | Press Draw path, click each point, then press Enter. |
| Chest | An object that hands out real inventory items. | Rez a box on the region and put the items in it (they must be copyable). Press Copy the chest script, make a new script in the box, paste it over the script’s text and save. The box says when it is bound. In WolfViewer now (Speedy Xenon) On across Wolf Territories (each region at its next restart) |
Escape stops placing at any time without changing anything. Places on another region have a Teleport there... button.
Ways on (triggers)
A trigger says when something happens and what to do then. Triggers belong to a box, so they only listen while the players are on that box.
- Step 1: Go to the Story page and pick your box with Go to... (or click the box on Your story map, press More... and Open the full editor).
- Step 2: Under Triggers, press Add trigger... and pick a sentence from the list.
- Step 3: Fill in its blanks: which area, which character, which object.
- Step 4: Under Do, press Add step... for anything that should happen, such as a journal entry or a reward.
- Step 5: Under Then go to, pick the next box.
The triggers you will use most:
| Trigger | Fires when |
|---|---|
| When a player arrives at... (an area) | They walk into the area. |
| When a player talks to... (a character) [and picks the reply...] | They talk to that character, or press a particular quick reply. |
| When a player touches... (an object name) | They touch an object with that exact name. No script needed. (An object whose description is touch: Old Strongbox counts as Old Strongbox too.) |
| When the party chooses... (a decision) [option...] | They answer a story card’s question. |
| When a player says something meaning... (words) | What they say to a character contains your words. |
| After... seconds | That many seconds after the box began. |
| When... becomes true | Something the story remembers reaches a value, such as clues found reaching 3. |
| When the GM presses... | A game master presses your button in the GM Console. |
| When a script fires... | One of your own scripts tells the story something happened. See Adding your own scripts. |
Each trigger also has Only if (a condition, such as “has key is yes”), Who (any player, all of them, or the leader) and Once.
Always leave a way forward
Every box needs at least one way on, or an End the story with an ending step. Your story map shows a box that leads nowhere in words: It leads nowhere yet.
